Awarded Top 10 Sydney Commercial Photographer

2020 is a year unlike any we have experienced in our lifetime. Circumstances have forced us to change the way we work, play, behave and interact. One thing that has not changed, however, is our need for creative expression. So it’s not surprising that the AIPP Epson State Awards adapted to the situation by designating the 2020 season The AIPP Silver Lining Awards.  These awards were administered online, incorporating image critiques and feedback sessions, judge training and a national competition culminating in a multi-state print exhibition.

It was a great way to continue some normal activities and bring our photography community together to join in competition and celebration of the great professional photography community that we have. Afterall, as art critic and winner of the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for Criticism, Jerry Saltz, said, “Isolation favours art”. So, let’s ignore the clouds and focus on the silver lining of 2020.

Awards improve my photography

I entered five images in the awards this year most of them in the Goods & Services category (a.k.a. Commercial Photography) and one in Landscape just because I loved that image and clearly remember the day I captured it on holiday in Montreal. Out of the four in Goods & Services I had one come out in the top ten and one in the top 25 of the category overall.

With close to 3500 entries I am very happy with that outcome that’s for sure, landing in both finalists and semi-finalist among some strong competition.

Awarded Top Ten in Goods and Services in the 2020 AiPP Silver Lining Awards

My entries were all architectural images – a subject I always enjoy and spend a lot of time capturing in my day-to-day commercial photography business. My top two architectural photos are both completely different from each other, though both are very captivating. You can see my finalist (left) and semi-finalist (top) images on this page or in the two Silver Lining Awards galleries. The style of my white one in the top ten finalists is becoming a specialty of mine. It’s an architectural photography style of white on white on white, which is a very difficult style to capture: putting details in all the white elements while still separating them from each other.

I am incredibly pleased with the results being in the top ten of Sydney photographers, especially for these two images that I have always liked. The Silver Lining Awards had finally given me a chance to enter them in a competition, and I’d say that’s definitely a silver lining of 2020 for me.

Let’s get noticed together.
