Let’s explore the difference between these two styles of photos and what you get from each of them. Starting with the headshot and who it’s meant to be for and who often books this type of capture and delivery

Headshots

Headshots are for those looking for photos that can be repeated/matched or captured on different days/weeks/months that always give the same results. They are usually higher in volume and the subject spend less time in front of the camera as the cost vs time is smaller.

Of course, those who book are advised of what to expect and how to prepare staff for the photography session. From clothing, style, brand colours (if required) and the outcome of the images including selections, image count and delivery.

The headshot image is often captured on a simple background, either plain white (very popular) or a repeatable background in an easy to access location.

When it comes to a white background that often depends on the office environment, usually I can turn any light to mid coloured wall into what is required. Or if need be, bring in the background to deliver the desired outcome.

Portraits

The portrait shoot is often more involved and reflects the personality of the subject.
I shoot many Sydney portraits where the location also adds to the style of the portrait and can require location scouting and or shooting in locations that fully reflect the desired outcome. A portrait leverages your brand or the brand of the business and delivers more storytelling. Lighting also plays a bigger role in the portrait session as it is used to shape the story being told and capturing the subject more fully than a quicker “headshot”.

A portrait shoot is more about opening a conversation with those who are looking at you online or in print, or however them come across you. Portraits are more detailed, more designed, more curated for your audience. You spend more time shooting them and use them to tell more of your story. You can think of it as an extension of yourself that people can get to know before contacting you. It is also referred to as a personal branding shoot which is just a different term for a portrait shoot.
