Commercial Renovations are Unicorn Events that Merit Photo-Documentation
Spotlight on the Mosman Council and Hutchinson Builders
Architectural photography is not just about showcasing the scale and form of a structure. It’s also about documenting new construction projects and telling their unfolding stories in rich, visual detail. That was my approach to two recent commercial photography and video productions projects in Sydney.
Capturing the makeover of a Sydney sports facility
The first project was for the Mosman Council. I was brought in to document the progress of the redevelopment of the Allan Border Oval and pavilion.
Right in the heart of Mosman, this sporting facility is an important part of community life. The redevelopment will improve the overall functionality of the space, making it a more modern, accessible and environmentally friendly recreational area for all Mosman residents.
Capturing the makeover is a once in a lifetime opportunity, never to be repeated. I have already captured the initial build stages, including the pouring of the concrete slab for the foundations. I’m looking forward to capturing other landmark moments of the project as they happen.
The Mosman Council were very forward-thinking in their decision to get the redevelopment professionally captured. Not only are the images and video an excellent way to share updates of the project with the community and other stakeholders, but this will also form an invaluable historical reference for future generations.
Documenting Sydney’s digital transformation
The second commercial photography project was for Hutchinson Builders. I was hired to capture the progress of the development of the new data centre in Artarmon, Sydney.
Using motion – aerial video, ground video and timelapse photography – I was able to get some amazing footage, which included moving of the large electrical transformers that will power the centre. This is a huge milestone in the data centre project. The client will use the video to report back to investors and other stakeholders.
This is another example of a once in a blue moon photography or video opportunity that will never come around again.
Award-winning architectural photography
I really enjoy long projects, such as those mentioned above, where a lot of patience and attention to detail is required. I also enjoy using all the technical expertise I’ve built up over three decades to get the right lighting, create high impact compositions and tell the client’s unique story.
Winning awards for my architectural images in the 2020 season of the AIPP Epson State Awards was a great honour and has motivated me to push the boundaries of commercial and architectural photography even further.
Seize the day
There is only a small window of opportunity for capturing buildings and structures in their present form. If you spend too much time second-guessing whether to invest in professional photography, you can easily miss out on the perfect moment to shoot. Whether it’s an exciting new community or commercial project, if you don’t act quickly, you will miss out!
When you get professional images done by an industry-recognised photographer, the results speak for themselves. That’s definitely the case for the Mosman Council and Hutchinson Builders projects.
